SITLA to sell 11 trust land parcels

The School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA) has announced it will sell 11 trust land parcels and one additional parcel on behalf of Utah State University at an auction Oct. 19.

The 3,500 acres up for auction — scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 19 at the Little America Hotel, 500 S. Main St., Salt Lake City — includes scenic and hunting properties. For example, the 200-acre Cave Valley parcel in Washington County is located adjacent to Zion National Park, near the Lambs Knoll hiking area. A 380-acre Comb Ridge parcel in San Juan County is located within an area identified for possible national monument status.

All trust land parcels offered at the auction are held in trust for the public school system and proceeds from the sale will be deposited into the $2 billion Permanent School Fund. Annual interest and dividends from the fund are distributed to each individual public school in Utah. SITLA is fiduciary of Utah’s 3.4 million acres of trust lands and is constitutionally mandated to generate revenue from Utah’s trust lands to build and grow permanent endowments for 12 state institutions designated by Congress in 1894.

Parcels at the auction include:

• Box Elder County: Willard North, 180.38 acres, near the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and suitable for waterfowl hunting and rangeland use.

• Box Elder County: Willard South, 33.09 acres, near the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and suitable for waterfowl hunting and rangeland use.

• Carbon County: Patmos Ridge Parcel A, 520 acres suitable for recreation.

• Carbon County: Patmos Ridge Parcel B, 200 acres suitable for recreation.

• Carbon County: Spring Canyon, 600.38 acres seven miles from Helper and suitable for big game hunting and other recreation.

• San Juan County: Comb Ridge, 380 acres six miles from Bluff and within an area proposed for the Bears Ears National Monument.

• San Juan County: Photograph Gap Parcel C, 180 acres along State Route 211, which leads to Canyonlands National Park, with agricultural, recreational and residential opportunities.

• Uintah County: Crouse Canyon, 600 acres deemed ideal big game hunting property within a limited-entry hunting unit located on Diamond Mountain.

• Uintah County: Diamond Rim, 640 acres of excellent big game hunting property located on the southern rim on Diamond Mountain.

• Washington County: Cave Valley, 200.18 acres adjacent to Zion National Park near Lambs Knoll hiking area, with many recreational opportunities.

• Wayne County: Hanksville South, 40 acres within the community of Hanksville, with commercial and residential development potential.

• Offered by Utah State University in Carbon County: Indian Canyon, 271.86 acres located near Price on Highway 191 and including buildings used formerly for education and manufacturing.
