With sunny skies outside and optimism inside, proponents of solar energy outlined a plan last week calling for solar to provide one-fifth of U.S. electricity generation by 2030.

Kicking off the Solar Power International gathering of about 20,000 people at the Salt Palace Convention Center, organizers declared the time until 2030 to be the “Solar+ Decade.” The goal of 20 percent compares with solar power being currently only 2.4 percent of the nation’s energy mix.
